Consultation on Proposals for Local Government Reorganisation in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham

This statutory consultation seeks views on the proposals that the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has received following the Secretary of State’s invitation to councils in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham to submit proposals for unitary local government for their area. The 3 proposals in this consultation were made by the following councils in November 2025.
Proposals for Local Government Reorganisation in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham
1. Bassetlaw District Council, Gedling Borough Council, Mansfield District Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council proposed 2 unitary councils. These would comprise the current areas of:

Sherwood Forest: Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Gedling, Mansfield, and Newark and Sherwood

Nottingham and South Nottinghamshire: Broxtowe, Nottingham, and Rushcliffe
This proposal is known locally as 1e.
2. Nottingham City Council proposed 2 unitary councils. This includes a request to split existing district council areas between the proposed new councils. These would comprise the current areas of:

Southwest: Nottingham, plus 15 wards from Broxtowe,15 wards from Gedling and 17 wards from Rushcliffe

North and East: Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood, plus 5 wards from Broxtowe, 4 wards from Gedling and 7 wards from Rushcliffe
This proposal is known locally as Bii.
3. Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council proposed 2 unitary councils. These would comprise the current areas of:

Nottingham City: Nottingham, Broxtowe, and Gedling

Nottinghamshire: Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood, and Rushcliffe
This proposal is known locally as 1b.
Ashfield District Council and Broxtowe Borough Council did not submit a proposal.
