Impact of improving voter registration

As a reminder, within the workshops we will discuss the leading ideas on how to improve registration. These are briefly described below:

  1. Integrated registration using “Once”/Change of Address Service (via GDS): This option looks increasingly promising and focuses on capturing individuals who have registered to vote but not updated their details.
  2. Integrated Registration using other government services (e.g. DVLA or Student Loans Company): Exploring this in parallel with “Once” but may be dropped if “Once” is feasible. Valuable insights can be gained even if it’s not the final approach.
  3. Extending the Canvass Data Match then using assisted or direct registration for the unregistered: Targets the estimated 1.5 million eligible individuals who are not registered. May involve using DWP’s CIS database and Home Office data on nationality.
1. What do you think are the main goals of improving registration – i.e. what are we hoping to achieve?
2. What do you think could be the longer-term impacts of the changes suggested? (i.e. what are the broader consequences or implications that could arise as a result of improving registration)
